Overcoming Negative Emotions : Expert Advice

Q. Sometimes I suddenly have a string of negative emotions and memories right in the morning. it makes me anxious and dysfunctional when I know I have loads of work to do in the day. I can't think straight on that particular day. It happens once or twice a month. Is it an anxiety attack or depression? Please tell me how to counter this and avoid such a situation in the future. - Riya, Nagpur

This is not a very uncommon problem and this certainly is not depression.

Life throws to us many situations and not every situation is going to be a pleasant one. The beauty of being human is that you can take charge of your emotions, even in your most testing times. However, this cannot happen if on daily basis one is quite engaged with emotions.

Appreciate that emotions are nothing but a state of mind with particular surge of thoughts. When we give it too much of importance because of our social conditioning that has kept emotions at high value, we cannot escape from the negative ones too. This may sound too harsh, but let me tell you that emotions are not something very sacred. In fact, when we stop giving them importance we do not become inhuman rather more human because then sensitivity in us gets expressed.

So, when these negative emotions cloud you, simply become attentive and tell yourself that it's alright and that there is no need to engage with it. Treat it as a passer-by, not as a valuable guest. You need not condemn/justify/reply to the thoughts coming to your mind. All this only magnifies them. Just let them be. They will soon disappear not finding your attention.

You can also divert your mind through exercising or by simply immersing yourself into some other activity. Physical activity is a great help. When your mind does not support you, remind it that you are the master.

Remember, the key is becoming attentive to not giving it any importance. It then goes off by itself. One has to be disciplined with oneself else emotions hijacks us.

All the best and I am sure you will be able to take care.
