There are stories that shape you as an individual, inspire you, and even define your views on particular things. While it's quite easy to join the crowd and mock someone who is different, respecting a person irrespective of their caste, creed, race, and sex requires personal and moral strength.

The story is set in 1950s East London, where racial discrimination was a prevalent practice. The narrator, Braithwaite, a well-educated black man is unable to find a job matching his capabilities. In desperation, he takes up a job as a literature teacher in a local school. The school's senior class, the one he is the class teacher of, is notorious for its antics and rowdy ways. So bad is their behavior that their last few teachers left the school hysterically.

Braithwaite encounters many obstacles in the formidable task of reforming these young brats. The students protest against his teaching methods, humiliate him and even fight him.

During his time in school, Braithwaite falls in love with a fellow teacher Gillian Blanchard. The two plan to marry, but face opposition from Gillian's parents who do not approve of a mixed-race marriage.

Will Braithwaite be able to marry Gillian?

Will he be able to transform the hostile, rebellious teens into young men and women who are considerate and self-respecting?

Read To Sir With Love to find answers.

The story does conclude in a very uplifting manner which is sure to bring tears to your eyes. So, I would strongly recommend you give the novel a shot, and trust me, it will be an enriching experience.
