For one reason or another, traveling solo might seem daunting. But once you're on the road, you'll realize how freeing a solo vacation can be. Travel is a form of self-care and an investment in oneself. If you're one of those few women who dream about going on a solo vacation, this article will walk you through the best tips.

1. MAKE A WISE DECISION WITH YOUR DESTINATION CHOICE

We all have preferences. Some like the tranquillity of the mountains, while others prefer the calm of the sea. Choosing a destination that suits your mood may work wonders for you, and you'll undoubtedly collect interesting travel stories in your backpack.

2. TRAVEL LIGHT

Traveling solo means no one to share the luggage load with. So, it is best to keep it light. Make a list of all the essentials you can't live without. Pack only what you need and don't over-stuff your baggage.

Nobody will call you out if you wear the same outfit twice. In fact, one of the best aspects of solo travel is not worrying about your outfits. But don’t forget to take a first-aid kid and pepper spray.

3. KEEP IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS SAFE

Traveling comes with its own uncertainties. So, it is better to stay prepared. Always have a backup of your paperwork and credit cards on hand, in case your stuff gets stolen. You should always store your documents in hotel safes and maintain a folder of xerox copies at home in case of an emergency.

If you plan to visit rural parts of India, carrying some cash in smaller amounts will come in handy. Even though the world is progressing digitally, ATM/credit cards do not work everywhere.

4. PRE-BOOK YOUR HOTELS

If you’re traveling during the rush season, booking hotels beforehand is crucial. When you're on a road trip with your family, you won't mind sleeping in the vehicle. But when you're traveling alone, you have to be a bit more careful.

Confirm your hotel status as soon as possible, even if it's before you leave. Having pre-booked rooms spares you from a panic attack at the last minute.

5. AVOID DRINKING

One rule to swear by while traveling solo is to NOT get tipsy. For starters, if you're drunk, you don’t know anybody and you can’t take care of yourself. And, second, to prevent yourself from landing into trouble.

You are solely responsible for your own safety. And even if you want to drink, don't get carried away -- stick to drinking within your limits. Get high on adventure, not alcohol!

6. KEEP YOUR PHONE CHARGED AT ALL TIMES

Keeping your phone charged and having a power bank on hand as a backup should be your priority. Phones don’t just help with locating places with Google Maps, they keep us connected to our loved ones. In fact, the latest phones have replaced the hefty cameras too.

This means a lot of usage of battery. So, having a backup phone or a power bank is something you should swear by.

7. ACT LIKE A LOCAL

You've probably heard the phrase, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This is ideal if you want to learn about and experience other cultures from across the world. Being a part of diverse cultures allows you to appreciate them.

Since you’re traveling solo, stay mindful of the people around you. From a safety standpoint, merging with the local crowd prevents you from standing out and attracting unwanted attention.

Solo traveling can be one of the most liberating experiences of your life. At the end of your trip, you will be happy you disregarded everyone who cautioned you against traveling alone as a woman.

And to stay prepared for any uncertainty that is thrown your way, follow these tips.

We would love to hear about your solo travel experiences and stories and learn from them.
