Quick Tips For Solo Women Travel
I recently went on a tour with a group of friends and stayed in a backpacker's hostel where I noticed the obvious dearth of solo female backpackers. If you are a woman who loves to travel, the idea of a solo trip would have definitely raised many questions and objections, especially from parents. Most of these concerns revolve around the issue of safety. Here are 10 tips for solo female travelers to follow for a safe, fun and hassle-free trip.
1. Be smart and confident
Wherever you go, always put up a confident faade especially in the face of danger. If you find yourself lost or in an uncomfortable situation, remain confident and assertive at all times, without showing any signs of fear. A confused or helpless look is a key for strangers to try and take advantage of you.
2. Travel during the day
It is a known fact that most unpleasant incidents happen during the night. If you are traveling long hours, make sure you try and reach your destination by nightfall. If night travel is unavoidable, use a trusted mode of transport and always stay connected.
3. Dress like a local
Yes, I know the concept of women dressing however they like is a debatable one. However, it is best to blend in with the local crowd and avoid attention even if it means ditching those beach shorts and being a little more conservative.
4. Do not get wasted
Traveling in a new city alone and getting completely wasted will definitely not end well. Always know where to draw the line between drinking for fun and drinking till you become vulnerable and unaware of your surroundings.
5. Learn the basics of the local language
Not knowing the local language is a major problem and may often encourage locals to rip you off. Try and learn basics of the local language in order to communicate better for basic needs and directions.
6. Read situations and trust your gut
If you feel like a particular place isn't safe or comfortable, get out of there. Never worry about being rude or hurting anyone, because self-care should be your number one priority.
7. Do not be too forward
While traveling solo, avoid unnecessary eye contact with men and do not become too friendly with strangers. This can often be mistaken for wrong intentions.
8. Protect yourself
It is always better to be safe than sorry. Try and keep a protective item with you, like a can of pepper spray or a small pocket knife. You never know when they can come in handy.
9. Leave a trail
While some people hate the barrage of photos on social media, in most ways, it is useful for your families and friends to keep a track of your journey. Keep in touch with people on a regular basis to reassure them of your safety.
10. Never reveal personal details
During your stay, you will definitely meet some men trying to make unnecessary conversation. Have an alter ego. Never reveal your personal details like your stay or your purpose of travel. With these tips, you're now ready to get started on your solo adventure!
