The Surprising Key to Building a Healthy Relationship that Lasts | Maya Diamond

The stats say that every 13 seconds a couple breaks up in the US. Maya in her talk mentions that one common string in all the long-lasting relationships is Emotional Responsiveness, which might sound quite easy and obvious but is definitely not.

There are 3 major elements of emotional responsiveness which are:

Accessibility: Whether you are available for your partner when he/she needs your presence or support.

Responsiveness: Are you engaged in celebrating your mate's good times and are you there to console and extend support in harsh times.

Engagement: How much do you value your partner and whether they are on your priority list or not. The level of Emotional Responsiveness can truly make or break your relationship, says Maya.

She adds on saying that our culture has taught us to consider our needs and emotions to be less important. She makes it clear that we need each other to thrive and attachment and support of our partners is a fundamental need for humans. She later explains the various blocks like, believing our partners to be adults, being overwhelmed by work/stress, disconnection from needs, etc. that restrict many of us from being responsive partners.

In this session, the speaker tries to figure out the reasons as to why one falls in love. Is it a magical or a biological process? Does it only involve the heart or is it a result of biochemical processes happening in the brain and the body? She then continues with very conflicting definitions of love she learnt from her granny and a cousin, who was a scholar in biochemistry. It is known that a man and a woman fall in love very differently. She highlights that there is a scarcity of research regarding the subject because of lack of volunteers and other reasons and so animal studies have been observed to find a conclusion. She then mentions the different hormones and chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, testosterone, vasopressin, etc. that are responsive and fluctuate while one is in love or attracted to someone. This video will widen your view about love between humans and various minute details incorporated.
